Spring has come to be known as the season of cleaning but HGTV took their own spin on Spring that makes it not only the season of cleaning, but also the season to renew your look. . .in home decor of course!
Here are the top five(5) trends they identified, let me know what you think!
1) Gingham
The best way I can describe this fabric print is by assimilating it to the checkered pattern of a picnic table cloth or blanket. HGTV’s suggestions; use lighter colors for the furniture upholstery with chrome nail heads to give it both a masculine and feminine appeal.
2) Fringe
It’s like the revival of the flapper! HGTV recommends using colorful fringe in wall hangings, light fixtures, and even carpet borders.
3) Black & White
This has to be one of my favorite trends. While I love using lots of color, the black and white look can go two very distinct ways:
(1) Used in solids, it can make a room look high-tech, modern, sleek, and high-fashion.
(2) Used in prints, especially floral, the look softens and becomes very elegant and classic as the patterns tone down the highly-contrasted black and white colors.
4) Oversized Art – Yes, bigger is better!
HGTV refers to these as “statement pieces” and I have no argument there. Of course you can get some really fantastic works of fine art in these large styles but you can also find pieces like these at Target, Wal-Mart, and Bed, Bath & Beyond. I love supporting local artists so that’s where I’ll go to find mine but if you’re decorating on a budget, the big box stores may just be the way to go.
4) Shibori
I already mentioned the revival of the flapper with fringe pieces but this style is more like the return of the 60’s and 70’s with its tie-dye appearance. This is actually a Japanese fabric dyeing technique, according to HGTV, but I’m going to call it elegant tie-dye. They use it in their featured design for a summer comforter and decorative pillows.
What are your thoughts? Are you going to be trying any of these decor trends this Spring?
